Poplar Blackwall & District Rowing Club

In March 2009, The Joanna Brown Trust presented Poplar Blackwall & District Rowing Club with their new lightweight 8's rowing boat. The boat was the first project completed by The Joanna Brown Trust. By request of the female members of Poplar Blackwall & District Rowing Club the boat was christened 'Jo Brown'.

Jo had been a member of the rowing club since 2005 and rowed in the Heads of the River races. During her time there Jo was always keen to ensure the female members of the club trained hard and had a good standard of equipment in order to succeed. The donation of the 'Jo Brown' ensures that Jo's passion for rowing lives on and that the current and future female members of the club have the chance to excel.

"I've been the women's coach at Poplar Rowing club for quite a few years and it was my pleasure to have Jo in one of my crews, we still miss her very much. The legacy of having the 'Jo Brown' eight has been a great help in expanding our women's squad, at the present there are about 35 women rowing at the club.

The boat won at The Head of the Dart in 2009 , The Greenwich Head and The Docklands Head in 2010. We almost got into the top 100 crews in the Women's Head of the River 2011 (an event with 315 eights racing over the boat race course)

My plans are for the ladies to race in the 'Jo Brown' at several regattas this year and I will keep you informed as to our progress. The boat is permanently racked at The London Regatta Centre where we have the use of a 2000 metre course and this also keeps it in pristine condition as we boat from a pontoon rather than the foreshore at Poplar"
